Cop car hit
A Bainbridge Island Police Department vehicle was struck while a suspect fled Aug. 14.
Police responded to a report of a theft in progress at 8:28 a.m. that Sunday in the 11000 block of Olallie Lane. The suspects were operating two vehicles — a white Toyota Tacoma and an older model van —when they left the scene. An officer encountered the vehicles at Arrow Point Drive at Miller Road. The suspect vehicles stopped briefly then drove to the left side of the road to escape. The Tacoma struck the passenger side of the marked police vehicle.
The Tacoma was found abandoned on Hart Lane. Officers searched for the driver without success. A trailer the Tacoma had been towing during the theft had been abandoned. The van was later recovered on High School Loop. Both vehicles were reported stolen. A red 1994 Ford F-250 was reported stolen from High School Loop and is possibly related to this incident. The officer was not injured.
Anyone with information on this incident is requested to contact BIPD at 206-842-5211.
Services funding
Bainbridge Island is seeking proposals to provide funding for local nonprofits to support human services programs in the 2023-24 funding cycle.
A total of $660,000 will be available. City funds support a range of services related to housing, health, youth programs, elder care and other human needs. Members of Human Services Funding Advisory Task Force, made up of seven citizens and two councilmember liaisons, review the proposals and make recommendations to the City Council.
Applicant and project requirements are included in the Request for Proposals that can be found on the city’s website at bainbridgewa.gov.
An informational meeting will take place Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. via Zoom or telephone 1-253-215-8782 (Webinar ID: 879 8596 1668). Attendance is not required to apply for funding.
For details email deputy city manager Ellen Schroer at eschroer@bainbridgewa.gov.
Youth forum
From substance use to climate change, from mental health to homelessness, from community safety to racial equity, youth voices can make a difference.
The Kitsap County Commission on Children & Youth and Kitsap Public Health District are co-hosting a forum so youth have a platform to freely talk about these ideas with the people making and passing policies in Kitsap County.
It will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Kitsap County Administration Building, 619 Division St., Port Orchard.
All ages are welcome. The forum is free and open to the public and registration is now open.
In addition, youth are also invited to attend a virtual training session to help them learn how to talk to elected officials and have their voice be heard. If you are between the ages of 12 and 20 and want to participate in the forum, register for one of the training sessions Sept. 12 or Oct. 5 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
For details contact youthforum@kitsappublichealth.org.

BIMA events
On Aug. 26 from 7-9 p.m., Hanz Araki returns to the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art for a show blending traditional Japanese shakuhachi flute with Irish influences.
The shakuhachi is a relatively obscure end-blown, bamboo flute; yet it produces perhaps the most quintessential sound associated with Japan and Japanese traditional music.
Also, there will be a Sewing Structures for Artist Books Workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10.
The workshop will introduce participants to a variety of sewing approaches to bookmaking that result in both traditional and non-traditional book structures. No experience necessary, and all materials and supplies are provided by the instructor.

Ritchie as a Brave
After being drafted by the Atlanta Braves, ex-Bainbridge High School pitcher and recent graduate J.R. Ritchie has been playing this summer in the Florida rookie league.
He is on a 25-pitch count so just went two innings in his pro debut against the Tampa Bay Rays team. He gave up a hit and had one strikeout. He is set to go to Augusta, GA for single A until that season ends Sept. 11. He’ll be back in BI Oct. 1, his dad Ian says in an email. He plans to work with local youth on his return and be “the best role model he can be and to try to inspire them to dream big.”
Bike for Pie
Bainbridge Island Bicycle Advocates Squeaky Wheels will be hosting Bike for Pie Aug. 28.
Registration runs from 9-11 a.m. at the BI Town Square where the Farmer’s Market takes place next to City Hall. The official ride begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 1 p.m.
The route goes north by the schools and on to Rolling Bay and back by the water and the STO trail, returning to the start/finish goal where there is pie and music. Cost is $20, $10 for 14 and younger.
The city will have a table at the event to explain the Sustainable Transportation Plan, which includes bikes, pedestrians and public transportation. It will also be talking about plans for the BI portion of the Seattle to Olympic Trail, part of the Great American Rail Trail. BI’s Parks and Trails Foundation will be there too talking about the Rail Trail.
