Battle Point lights?
The Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District has scheduled an information presentation by the BI Pickleball Association regarding its interest in expanding pickleball at Battle Point Park.
The meeting is June 6 at 6 p.m. The presentation will be by Clay Roberts, president of the association, at the BI Recreation Center, 11700 NE Meadowmeer Circle. Public comments can be made. Roberts has stated his desire for lights for night-time play. The Battle Point Astronomical Association and park neighbors have objected to the lights.
The BPAA will meet June 5 at the Observatory for a free short movie at 6, 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. followed by discussion about preserving the dark, association president Frank Petrie says in a BPAA news release.
Juneteenth event
A Bainbridge Island Juneteenth Celebration will take place at the Bainbridge Performing Arts Center and Town Square from 4-8 p.m. June 19.
Education Academy
Viking Education Academy, a new tutoring and continuing education place in Poulsbo, will have its grand opening and ribbon cutting May 31 at 2 p.m. at 1450 NW Finn Hill Road.
The academy offers a variety of lessons, classes and workshops throughout the summer, catering to K-12 students and adults, both in-center and online, a news release states. For more information, visit viking-education.com.
Steel orchestra
The Steel Dragons Steel Orchestra will perform a free public concert at Winslow Green June 28 from noon to 1 p.m.
The intermediate youth ensemble of Steel Magic Northwest, a nonprofit that provides steelband as a youth activity in Edmonds and Kent, is a group of 24 players who have been playing the instrument for at least two years. The age range is 12-19.
Their repertoire includes the expected Caribbean styles like calypso and soca, but also includes pop and rock tunes, movie themes, even light classical.
Meet mayor
Bainbridge Island Mayor Joe Deets will have his office hours June 1 from 10 a.m. to noon at CUPS Expresso at 123 Bjune Drive SE in Winslow for anyone wanting to talk about city business.
Penpals meet
South Colby third-graders were penpals all year with Manchester third-graders, and Kitsap Transit provided transportation so the classes could meet in person recently.
They were able to attend P.E., have lunch and participate in some STEAM activities together.
