Block Party

The Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the end of summer with the community with a Block Party Sept. 12 from 2-5 p.m.

The event will feature live music, food trucks and a chance to support local businesses. The location is 945 Hildebrand Lane.

The event actually celebrates an Open House at the Bainbridge Health and Wellness Center.

Electrification Expo

The Bainbridge Island Environmental Conference and Electrification Expo will take place Sept. 14 at Woodward Middle School from noon to 5 p.m.

Speakers will talk about conservation and how the community can reduce its carbon footprint and improve public health. Policy experts will share information on funding to support cleaner energy. Homeowners and organizations will talk about transitioning to electrification.

Free series

Library U’s free Fall 2024 Humanities Speaker Series begins Sept. 22 at the Bainbridge Public Library.

Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. Stomp and Shout: The Untold History of Northwest Rock & Roll. Presented by Peter Blecha, director of the Northwest Music Archives, an award-winning author, founding curator at MoPop, and a longtime staff historian at HistoryLink.org.

Sept. at 11 a.m. Heaven on the Half Shell: Washington State’s Oyster Odyssey. Presented by David George Gordon, an author who discusses the Olympia, Eastern and Pacific oysters, along with the people who have cultivated these delicacies for generations.

Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. Coming Home: How the Nez Perce Tribe Regained Its Cultural Heritage.Hear how the Nez Perce and its allies purchased the largest and oldest collection of material culture—including dresses shirts, and other regalia—from a museum over 2,000 miles away.

Swim raises $50K

The 18th annual Arms Around Bainbridge relay swim raised over $50,000 last month to help locals dealing with critical illnesses.

About 80 volunteers of all ages swam the 30-mile relay around BI with the help of Bainbridge Prepares, BI police marine unit, the BI Land Trust and some local businesses.

Group board member Ken Bennett said funds help critically ill islanders and their caregivers cover costs including rent, groceries, medication, utilities, ferry tickets and chef-made meals.

Seven friends started the event in 2007 to help their friend, Olivia Carey, who was battling ovarian cancer.

Injury accident

A 67-year-old Bremerton woman was injured when the car she was a passenger in was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old Bainbridge Island man Aug. 31.

The 77-year-old Bremerton man who was driving the car that was hit was stopped at a red light on Highway 303 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

Charges are pending an investigation. A State Patrol news release says drugs or alcohol may have been a factor.

Book signing

Anisa Ashabi, author of Finding Chaz, will be at Eagle Harbor Book Co. on downtown Bainbridge Island from 1-3 p.m. Sept. 15.

Along with meeting with fans, she will sign copies of her book, which was also a TV pilot filmed on BI in July.

Sing in choir

Crescendo, a choral group for adults and older teens, is looking to add singers.

The group ranges from accomplished musicians to people who learn mainly by ear. The 12-week fall session ends Dec. 16 with a public concert at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church.

Director Wendi Olinger has already picked some music, and the group will vote on the rest at the first rehearsal Sept. 23. The mix will be holiday songs, standards, Broadway tunes, classics and pop.

Crescendo rehearses from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays at the Ovation Studio, 600 Ericksen Ave., Suite 103. The fee is $99. Some partial and full scholarships are available. The intent is that anyone who wants to sing should be able to.

Crescendo is part of Ovation Performing Arts Northwest, a Bainbridge-based nonprofit theater and performance company. For details go to ovationmtb.com/crescendo

Free concert

Ranger and the Re-Arrangers featuring Alex Douglas on sax will perform a free swing concert on the Bainbridge Performing Arts lawn Sept. 14 from 5-7 p.m.

Bainbridge Island Mayor Joe Deets is having his office hours Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at CUPS Espresso, 123 Bjune Drive SE in Winslow.

Golf fundraiser

The Vitalize Kitsap Golf Tournament and Fundraiser will take place Sept. 14 at White Horse Golf Club.

Vitalize creates programs for teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Kitsap County.

Get a tree

Residents of Bremerton can get a free tree as part of the city Tree Committee’s Community Canopy Program.

100 trees will be given away. Pick up is Sept. 21 from 9-11 a.m. at the city’s Public Works building, 100 Oyster Bay Ave. N.
