Book Arts Festival
Bainbridge Island Museum of Art’s DogEar Festival returns April 4-6.
The event will bring together artists, community members, curators, scholars and creatives for lectures, hands-on printmaking and demonstrations in the galleries, a whimsical Edible Book “Chompetition,” a pop-up print market, a concert with the Bushwick Book Club, and other live activations and music to keep art-lovers of all ages occupied, a news release states.
This year’s festival centerpiece is BIMA’s Artists’ Books exhibition, Power of the Presses, a sweeping survey of contemporary works that examines the creative potency of printing as a hallowed art form. Festival goers will have the opportunity to engage with the many facets of bookmaking and witness how artists use the printed page as both a medium and a canvas.
Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 4, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 5-6.
Environmental Conference
The Bainbridge Island Environmental Conference takes place April 13 from 1-4 p.m. at IslandWood.
This year’s conference is a celebration of community science that engages, informs and helps the community prepare for the City Nature Challenge (April 25-28). Connect with organizations dedicated to conservation, education and stewardship, and learn tools, techniques and scientific methods that will support your involvement with community science projects in the area, a news release says.
Megan Rohrssen of the Bainbridge Island Land Trust and Christina Woolf from IslandWood will present local projects that rely on community engagement to identify and monitor natural ecosystems and resources. The event will celebrate the community activism of a local couple receiving this year’s Environmentalist of the Year award, a 20-year tradition. There will also be displays and walking tours of IslandWood.
Cleats for a Cause
Through March 31, Good Play America and BI Flashdrive are launching a cleat collection initiative to provide new and gently used soccer cleats (and soccer balls) to underserved youth players in Colombia.
Founded by Bainbridge Island resident and Colombian-born Alejandro Henao, GPA has helped hundreds of young soccer players by supplying gear and team support, per a news release. BI Flashdrive, a community-driven initiative that organizes short, high-impact donation drives, is supporting the effort.
Drop-off locations are at Island Fitness (190 Madison Ave. N.) and BI Recreation Center (11700 Meadowmeer Circle NE).
