Installation of solar panels on Bainbridge Island City Hall began last week.

Lead installers for Sunergy Systems, Jason Duensing and Mike Pogorzelski, were lucky with the weather as they worked. Rain can make for a rather slippery work surface on the roof of city hall.

“I’d rather have it without rain or sun,” Duensing said. “But this isn’t so bad.”

Under a warm sun, and before an impressive view of Winslow, the two installers spent much of the week placing “L-feet” on the roof. The L-feet hold in place the beams that the solar planes will be mounted on.

Each panel weighs approximately 40 pounds, which initially may not sound too heavy. When considering that 297 panels will eventually be installed on the roof, however, the Duensing and Pogorzelki’s job of properly installing the mounting gear carries a lot of weight.

The solar panels will be made by Itek Energy out of Bellingham.

The installation process will take around three weeks. By mid-July, city hall will have a fully functional solar power system feeding into the building.
