The Bainbridge Island Garden Club will host its annual plant sale 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 9. All proceeds go to a scholarship fund for graduating seniors at Bainbridge High School and Eagle Harbor High School planning a career in horticulture or environmental studies.

Several thousand plants, trees, shrubs, veggies and herbs will be on display for visitors to choose from during the event.

“This year we have lots of iris, Siberian, Pacific Coast, bearded and so on,” said Marilyn Mathis, vice president program chairman of the club. “The perennials go fast especially if they are blooming.” “This is our big fundraiser for the year, and we have about 75 percent participation on the day of and many members potting up and bringing their own plants to the sale. During the year, we have “potting parties” where members bring plants from their yards to divide and plant. This year we had many people donate plants from their yards who are not members of the club,” Mathis said.

Club officials estimate the sale brings in between $1,500 to $2,000 each year.

The club will next meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 11 at the First Baptist Church on the corner of Highway 305 and Madison Avenue.
