Bainbridge Island Police Commander Sue Shultz has resigned from her position at the police department.

City officials announced her departure Friday, one day after the results of an outside investigation into allegations of gender bias by Shultz against other female officers in the department was released. The investigation found no conclusive evidence of gender bias on Shultz’ part.

“Commander Shultz is to be commended for the many contributions she has made to the Bainbridge Island Police Department and the Bainbridge Island community,” City Manager Doug Schulze said in a press release Friday morning.

“Although we have reached a mutual agreement that the leadership change within the Bainbridge Island Police Department is necessary, I want to be respectful of the many contributions Commander Shultz has made to improve public safety in Bainbridge Island and Kitsap County,” he added.

Shultz resignation comes in the wake of being put on administrative leave after an investigation was launched into allegations that she mistreated female officers.

The investigation did find that Shultz was harder on female officers than their male counterparts, but said proof of gender bias was inconclusive.
