The Bainbridge Island School District has started taking applications from people interested in filling the vacancy on the school board left empty by the resignation of John Tawresey.

Applications for the District 3 seat will be accepted until Friday, April 13.

Any applicant for the seat must be a U.S. citizen, a registered voter in Washington, and live within the boundaries of District 3 (http://www.bisd303.org/Page/5475).

The school board will review the applications and select qualified applicants to be interviewed.

District officials said the board expects to make an appointment to the position at its April 26 meeting.

Tawresey was arrested by Bainbridge Island Police after he allegedly hit two other vehicles with his Ford F350 pickup truck near San Carlos Restaurant on Madison Avenue on Feb. 29. Witnesses to the crash said he tried to leave after the accident, but bystanders blocked his exit and called 911.

He resigned from the school board the following week.
