A Bainbridge Island man died in a nine-car crash Saturday on Interstate 90 just west of Snoqualmie Pass.
Dashiell Mortell, 19, of Bainbridge was a sophomore at Washington State University and was on his way back to college at the time of the accident. He was a passenger in a 1996 Ford Explorer, according to the Washington State Patrol, along with four other WSU students when their SUV hit another vehicle that had slowed down because of another accident on the highway ahead.
The Ford Explorer, which was being driven by a 21-year-old Bremerton man, collided with the vehicle in front of it and then rolled over.
A driver in a GMC pickup behind the Ford then struck the Ford, and six other vehicles then collided with the crashed pickup and SUV.
The crash occurred about five miles west of Cle Elum.
According to the Daily Evergreen, the Explorer was driven by Andrew Hammond, a senior at WSU, and the other passengers included senior Justin Crawford and freshman John Crawford, brothers, and another student, Morgan Chanlin.
The driver was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, according to the Daily Evergreen, while John Crawford, Hammond and Chanlin were taken to Kittitas Valley Hospital.
