Samuel Kallas, a Washington native and Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps midshipman at Iowa State University, is participating in annual training this summer.
The NROTC summer training includes “Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen” for third class midshipmen, and “Atlantic/Pacific Training of Midshipmen” for second and first class midshipmen.
“NROTC has given me the opportunity to hone my leadership style in a controlled and professional environment, and has given me the tools to become a leader among my peers,” Kallas said.
Summer cruises present midshipmen the opportunity after their sophomore and junior years of college to receive training for their future careers in the Navy.
Midshipmen learn about the enlisted lifestyle and daily routine. They can also shadow an officer. Summer cruises familiarize midshipmen with the mission, tasks and equipment within the various warfare areas; surface, subsurface, aviation and Marine Corps.
Kallas is the son of Alexander Kallas and Robin Kallas of Bainbridge Island.
