Police Blotter
Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents:
MARCH 10
9:27 a.m. Thefts from two vehicles at a single residence on Windsong Loop were reported, the first of a string of reported car prowls in the North Madison Avenue area March 10. The reporting resident said she and her husband had parked their vehicles outside the evening before. When they came outside the next morning, the lights were on inside one vehicle and its trunk was open. The owner’s manual and registration documents were missing from one vehicle. A GPS unit and sunglasses had been taken from the other. The resident was unsure whether the vehicles had been locked. No suspects.
9:37 a.m. A Bainbridge Internet-based company reported that someone had fraudulently used one of their client’s credit card numbers to buy 100 fluorescent light bulbs and various types of electronic equipment. The order had already been shipped to an address in Coatsburt, Ill., when the fraud was discovered. The merchandise totaled $1,576. The case was recorded.
10:32 a.m. Paperwork and a disabled placard were stolen overnight from a vehicle parked in a driveway off North Madison Avenue. The owner said her neighbor had called 911 early that morning to report a suspicious vehicle in her driveway. Police contacted that neighbor, who said she had seen a sedan pull into her driveway at 3:30 a.m. She said she watched a young man exit the sedan and try to open the door of her Volvo, which was locked. The man reportedly got back into his car and sped away.
1:38 p.m. A $2,000 laptop was stolen from the trunk of a car on North Madison Avenue overnight. The owner said the laptop contained business files including financial information for clients.
6:45 p.m. Residents on Windsong Loop discovered documents missing from their vehicle. They suspected a car prowl had occurred early that day.
9:07 p.m. A Bainbridge driver fled the scene after her 2003 Volkswagen Beetle plunged over an embankment on Fort Ward Hill and slammed into a tree. Police apprehended the woman a half mile from the site of the wreck. She was arrested for driving under the influence and obstructing the law. The woman had apparently been driving southbound on Fort Ward Hill Road when her car swerved 90 degrees to the right and plunged over the bank. No injuries were reported. The Beetle was towed.
MARCH 11
11:30 p.m. A skateboarder riding on the wrong side of the road, without a helmet or headlamp, collided head-on with a Mazda sedan motoring north on Olympic Drive. The force of the collision threw the skateboarder into the car’s windshield and over its roof. The skateboarder suffered leg and possible neck injuries. The Mazda sustained front end damage. The boarder was cited for negligent skateboarding.
MARCH 13
11:23 a.m. Police and fire responded to a structure fire on North Madison Avenue. The chimney of a wood stove had caught a small portion of the roof on fire. No injuries were reported.
1:39 p.m. A Bainbridge resident brought police a fraudulent cashier’s check he had received in the mail. The man said he had received an email from someone in Pasadena, Calif., instructing him to deposit the $4,750, keep 10 percent and send the balance back. A representative at his bank confirmed that the check was a fraud. The case was recorded.
4:55 p.m. A Port Orchard driver motoring north on SR-305 rearended a car after being distracted by an accident scene at Day Road. The driver was cited for inattention. No injuries reported.
5:27 p.m. An officer stopped a dump truck off Miller Road after a records check showed its tabs and tonnage were expired. The officer requested that the driver pressurize the vehicle’s brakes and heard an air leak behind the truck’s cab. “It’s not supposed to do that?” the driver asked. The officer noted that the man’s commercial license did not appear to match the weight limits of the vehicle he was driving. The man was warned for the tabs, tonnage and brake issues and was cited for having incorrect endorsements.
9:56 a.m. A citizen reported her suspicions that a man living in an apartment on High School Road was selling prescription drugs to high school students. The woman said she often saw students loitering around the apartment. The report was recorded.
MARCH 15
1:12 a.m. A vehicle was stopped on Hidden Cove Road for failing to use a turn signal, and its driver was cited for driving with a suspended license and failure to provide proof of insurance. The driver was given a ride to the casino. The car was parked for owner to pick up.
6:42 a.m. A driver was cited for a suspended license after being stopped on Winslow Way. A passenger in the vehicle agreed to drive the car away.
3:51 p.m. Bainbridge police and the harbormaster assisted in the rescue of a kayaker caught in stormy weather between Restoration Point on Bainbridge and Aliki Point in Seattle. The kayaker, a Bainbridge man, had been paddling from Vashon Island to Blake Island when he was caught in high winds and seas. The Coast Guard cutter Wahoo arrived first on scene and a small boat was launched to pick up the paddler. The paddler and kayak were then transferred to the harbormaster’s boat for transport to Bainbridge. The man was turned over to his wife at the Queen City Yacht Club.
4:59 p.m. A rotten tree fell on the front of a Honda Civic on Sunrise Drive during a windstorm. The incident occured between Knight and Sunrose roads. No injuries reported; the car was towed.
MARCH 16
2:07 p.m. A woman canceled her debit card after she discovered a FedEx account had fraudulently been opened in her name. The case was recorded.
2:22 p.m. A black wallet belonging to a Seattle resident was found on West Blakely Road. The wallet was entered into evidence. A letter was sent to an address found in the wallet.
2:36 p.m. The owner of a Madison Avenue restaurant discovered his keys had been stolen from the counter. The man said the cost of rekeying and replacement would run nearly $1,300. No suspects.
MARCH 17
8:24 a.m. Suspects apparently jumped a locked fence at an Old Mill Road utility company and vandalized the company’s. Repairs were estimated at $100.
