Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents:
OCTOBER 28
10:42 p.m. A Ford Aerostar van was reported stolen from a parking area at an apartment complex on Parfitt Way. The van’s owner had last seen the vehicle in the parking area at 9:30 p.m. She said she noticed headlights pulling into the parking area at 10:30 p.m. and moments later realized the van was gone. The owner said the van had been unlocked and a spare key had been left in a cup holder. The woman’s purse and wallet were in the van, along with some books, a blanket and two coolers. The items were valued at $150. The van was described as green with one mismatched quarter panel and several antenna balls attached to its antenna. Police checked the ferry terminal and several other locations on the island without result. The vehicle was reported as stolen.
OCTOBER 29
12:39 p.m. Two Bainbridge High School students reported thefts from their gym lockers. The boys told police they shared a locker during P.E. class. Following class that day they found their pants on the floor by the locker. One was missing $95 in cash, the other $41.25. No suspects.
8:30 p.m. Officers responded to a report of theft at a Winslow Way restaurant. The store owner found $110 missing from the business’s register and coin box. Two employees were suspected. The investigation continues.
OCTOBER 30
1:56 p.m. A vehicle was stopped on Madison Avenue after an officer recorded it traveling 37 mph in a 20 mph school zone. The driver, a Bremerton man, spoke little English and did not have identification. The car belonged to the man’s employer. The man was arrested for driving without a license.
OCTOBER 31
3:46 p.m. A woman reported seeing two boys painting graffiti on a wall at the Kids Discovery Museum. The woman said that the youths fled as she approached. She did not recognize either. The pair had used black ink to draw a mushroom-shaped figure on a southwest wall. Damage was estimated at $200.
4:31 p.m. A Bainbridge woman reported that someone had punched out a lock on the door of her boyfriend’s car, which she had left parked on Winslow Way. Nothing was taken from the vehicle. Damage repair was estimated at $180.
9:51 p.m. An officer pulled over a Volkswagen after observing it cross the centerline of Winslow Way and nearly strike an oncoming vehicle. As the officer approached the car, it pulled away and turned north onto SR-305. The officer and a second patrol car pursued the Volkswagen, following it into the Vineyard Lane development, where it finally stopped in a parking garage. The driver appeared very intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. As she stepped out of the vehicle, the woman began pulling items out of her shirt pocket and dropping them on the ground. The officer asked how much she had drunk that night, and she replied “A few.” After refusing sobriety tests, the woman was arrested for driving under the influence and booked into Kitsap County Jail.
NOVEMBER 1
1:26 a.m. An officer observed a Jeep driving erratically on SR-305 near Manual Road. The Jeep made a sliding turn onto Hidden Cove Road, nearly losing control, then weaved over the centerline several times. The officer activated the patrol car’s emergency lights and siren but the Jeep kept going. It ran a stop sign at Phelps Road and turned left, ran another stop sign at Phelps Road and Madison Avenue and turned right. The Jeep finally pulled over on Madison Avenue. The driver rolled down his window as the officer approached, and the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol and marijuana. When asked why he had failed to pull over, the driver said “you were only behind me for ten seconds” and said he thought the officer was trying to pull over someone else. The officer pointed out there had been no one else in the area, to which the man replied “well, you have those walkie talkies… might have been trying to get someone else.” He told the officer he was on his way to his girlfriend’s house on the “sand spit.” Several beer bottles and six pack containers were visible inside the car. The man said he had drunk “about three or four beers” at the casino earlier. Following field sobriety tests and a breath test he was arrested. A Suquamish police officer and a K9 unit were called in to assist with a search of the vehicle. The search turned up a small amount of marijuana, a glass pipe, a digital scale and several open beer containers. As he was booked into jail, the man told the officer about his previous drunk driving convictions, and said he had “bad luck” because every time he drinks and drives he gets arrested. He was booked into Kitsap County Jail on charges of driving under the influence, drug paraphernalia possession and failure to obey an officer.
1:54 p.m. An officer investigated a house on McDonald Avenue that appeared to be abandoned and damaged. The home’s driveway was overgrown with blackberries and several windows on its second floor were broken out. No one was found inside. The home’s floors were rotting and plants were invading through broken out windows. There were some personal items scattered about. It appeared that people had been sleeping in the house or using it to meet at. A report of the home’s condition was forwarded to the code enforcement officer as a possible safety hazard.
8 p.m. The mother of a Bainbridge High School student reported that her son’s locker had been broken into at school that day, and several items had been stolen. Items included $20 cash, an iPod Nano and a orange Samsung cell phone. The theft happened sometime between 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. No suspects.
