Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents:

Nov. 11

An apartment manger alerted the police that a known suspect with felony warrants was staying at his grandmother’s apartment.

They went to the residence where his grandmother is supposed to be living by herself. The officers knocked on the door and an elderly female voice asked who it was. The officers announced that it was the police and no one responded. An officer went outside in the event that the suspect was trying to escape out the third story balcony. The people inside the apartment refused to open the door.

After more unanswered knocks, the manager used the passkey to open the door. The officer observed the man and his grandmother on the living room sofa. Upon seeing the police, the man got up and quickly went to the sliding door and stepped onto the balcony. The officer told him to stop and not try to escape, as there were officers outside. The officer had a Taser out and had it focused on the suspect. The man was ordered several times to get on the ground and refused to do so. Due to the elevated balcony, the officer secured his Taser and approached the man. The officer took the suspect to the floor and another officer was able to apply handcuffs. The man was taken to the county jail and booked on two felony and two misdemeanor warrants.

7:47 p.m. Officers responded to a report of a possible attempted assault that had taken place at the Island Grill on Hildebrand Lane. The suspect had reportedly almost punched someone, then got in his brown van and nearly struck someone in the process of running up on a curb with his van.

Officers asked the man what happened. The man was very dismissive of the questioning and continually attempted to ask the officers unrelated questions. The officer noticed blood shot eyes and a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the suspect’s mouth, and slurred speech as he talked to them.

The man refused a voluntary breath test. The officer then asked the suspect to take some field sobriety tests to assure that he was not intoxicated. He said he would not.

The suspect smelled strongly of intoxicants, so officers arrested him for driving under the influence. The officers searched the man and found a large, blue, glass smoking pipe, with residue in the bowl, commonly used to smoke marijuana.

At the police station, the man was read his rights and contacted an attorney. The suspect then took a breathalyzer test. His first test result was .142 and the second was .152. The man was charged with fourth-degree assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Nov. 13

An officer observed a car traveling 30 mph in a 40 mph zone, crossing the centerline then weaving back and forth between the centerline and the fog line. The driver turned right onto Day Rd., and traveled westbound in the eastbound lane.

The officer stopped the driver and noticed the driver’s eyes were watery and bloodshot, and that her face was flushed. As the woman looked for her license and registration, the officer asked her to put the vehicle in park. The driver handed the officer an expired Washington driver’s license, and the officer smelled a strong odor of intoxicants coming from her breath.

The officer asked if the woman had been drinking. She said she didn’t know. The officer asked how she could not know if she had been drinking. She didn’t answer. The officer informed her that he smelled alcohol on her breath and asked again if she had been drinking. The woman said she had two drinks that night.

The woman agreed to take field sobriety tests. The officer asked her to step out of her vehicle. The driver asked if she should put her car in park. The officer told her the vehicle was already in park. The officer performed a horizontal gaze test, the one leg stand test, and the walk and turn test. Before the officer told the woman to begin the one leg test, she began lifting each foot off the ground and walking forward in a marching fashion. The woman failed to follow the directions and failed the tests. The officer then placed the woman under arrest for DUI.
