Islanders who want to get rid of unwanted prescription medications can bring their drugs to the Bainbridge Island police station this weekend as the department participates in the Drug Enforcement Agency’s nationwide “Drug Take-Back Initiative.”

Police will gather prescription medications for disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26.

Officials are asking residents who have unwanted prescription medications but can’t make it to Saturday’s event to hold onto their medications until the next “take back” event, and not dispose of any medications in the trash or by flushing. The events are held twice a year.

“It’s important to dispose of unwanted medication in the safest, most environmentally responsible way and the Bainbridge Island Police Department is happy to provide that venue for our citizens,” said Police Chief Matthew Hamner.
