The Bainbridge Island Review was named one of the best non-daily newspapers in the Pacific Northwest in the 2012 Society of Professional Journalists Northwest Excellence in Journalism Contest.

The Review earned second place in the General Excellence competition for non-daily newspapers published in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Awards in the annual contest were presented at ceremonies held by the Society of Professional Journalists in Seattle and Portland, Ore. on Saturday, May 18.

Review Publisher Donna Etchey said the award was a great tribute to the dedication of the newspaper staff.

“This would not have been possible without the leadership of editor Brian Kelly. It takes a team effort, from the hard work of the marketing department and production, to the front office, circulation department and the newsroom,” she said. “I am so very pleased and proud of the entire staff.”

“We’re also so grateful for our readers and advertisers; we would not have such a successful newspaper without their support and encouragement,” Etchey said.

More than 260 news outlets and journalists participated in this year’s competition. Entries were reviewed by judges in Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Illinois and Missouri.

Kelly also praised the contributions of the Review’s staff and their hard work over the past year.

“We have a truly exceptional team that’s committed to providing the most comprehensive news package that Bainbridge readers can get — every day and every week — and it’s humbling for me to work alongside such skilled professionals,” Kelly said.
