Bainbridge Island’s Rotary Club officially has a day to honor its many years of community service.

Monday, Feb. 24 marked the first “Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island Day.”

The club celebrated its 67th anniversary the same day.

The proclamation, approved by the city council and signed by Mayor Anne Blair last week, noted the city’s gratitude and congratulations to the island’s Rotary Club for “contributing to the betterment of the Bainbridge Island community for 67 years.”

A day earlier, Feb. 23, Rotary International observed its 109th anniversary.

Both groups have worked with Rotary Clubs around the world in such projects as constructing clean water wells in Uganda, providing micro-finance opportunities to Guatemalan women and funding vocational, community service and leadership scholarships for local youth.

The Bainbridge Rotary has also sponsored youth exchange programs help train leaders to create a more peaceful world.

Locally, the club has had a pivotal role in gathering community input, providing funding and altogether bringing to reality such projects as The Waypoint, Rotary Park, the Bainbridge Public Library, Waterfront Park Community Center and the local Boys & Girls Club.

In the city’s proclamation, the club was recognized for working “to create a spirit of ‘service above self’ for the benefit our community.”

The Bainbridge Island Rotary meets Mondays at the Wing Point Country Club for lunch and at the Waterfront Park Community Center for dinner. With its 116 members, the organization raises most of its annual community service budget through the summer Rotary Auction.
