The Bainbridge Island Safeway will throw open its doors Wednesday for a “grand re-opening” to celebrate the finish of the extensive remodel of the grocery store.
The community is invited to stop by to sample some of the store’s newest vendors. The list includes Gig Harbor Candy Co. of Gig Harbor; Farm Kitchen Cookies of Poulsbo; Hempler’s Bacon of Bellingham; Seattle Pickle Co. of Seattle; Chef Burk BBQ Sauce of Fife; and Peak Sherpa Barley Cereal of Newcastle.
There will also be giveaways of localized reusable bags, and radio station KRWM-FM will be on hand to award prizes.
Plus, 200 customers selected at random will receive free groceries. And there will be cake, of course.
The community celebration kicks off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, with a brief performance by the Bainbridge Island High School Band.
The Bainbridge Safeway will also thank its customers by honoring community champions at Helpline House Food Bank, PAWS of Bainbridge Island, Boys & Girls Club of Bainbridge Island and the Bainbridge Schools Foundation.
The Safeway on High School Road has gone through an extensive expansion and remodel in recent months.
The changes include an expanded produce department; a renovated Starbucks kiosk with an indoor seating area; a remodeled deli; a full-service butcher block that now offers Kobe beef; the custom cake and scratch bakery; and enhanced local, natural, organic, specialty, healthy and ethnic offerings.
The Bainbridge Island Safeway is the second major grocery store to undergo major renovations in recent years. The Town & Country Market in downtown Winslow had a complete makeover that started in early 2014.
The Bainbridge Safeway employs more than 170 people and is managed by Josh Tuttle.
At Wednesday’s grand re-opening, Tuttle will recognize several longtime Bainbridge Island Safeway employees whose experience working at the store totals more than 250 years.
