Bainbridge school officials to add three days to school year for Blakely students

Bainbridge school officials are looking at extending the school year for students at Captain Johnston Blakely Elementary.

The school year needs to be lengthened, officials said, because the new Blakely elementary school opened late due to schedule challenges in obtaining an occupancy permit.

The school year started Wednesday, Sept. 4, but Blakely students did not start classes until Monday, Sept. 9.

Three days will be added to the school year for Blakely students.

At its meeting this week, the Bainbridge Island School Board is expected to move the last day of school for Blakely Elementary from Tuesday, June 16 to Friday, June 19.

Officials are also expecting to add three snow days to the Blakely calendar — June 22 through June 24 — in case there is inclement weather this winter that prompts school closures.

That said, the last day of school for Blakely is expected to be June 19, weather permitting.

The Bainbridge Island School Board will meet at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 at Bainbridge Island Fire Department’s Station 21 on Madison Avenue NE (due to the renovation of the Bainbridge High 100 Building).
