Two Bainbridge Island schools held short lockdown drills this week.

Captain Johnston Blakely Elementary School held its practice lockdown Thursday morning, and Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary held a drill Friday afternoon.

Neither school was evacuated during the drills.

At Blakely, the drill kicked off with an announcement from the principal that it was only a drill. Teachers gathered their students, shut and locked their classroom doors, and closed the blinds while other members of the school staff locked exterior doors and did a walk-through of the building.

The drill at Wilkes was also short, with students staying in their classrooms and teachers sending an email report to the main office that noted any extra students or adults in their rooms as well as any missing students.

Wilkes teachers will also talk with students next week about what to do during a lockdown, especially if they are at recess or in the lunchroom.

Lockdown drills are conducted annually in island schools, and a school district official said one of this week’s drills had been planned before the shooting tragedy in Newtown, Conn.

The district did, however, hold one of its ongoing district emergency planning meetings with the Bainbridge Island Fire Department earlier than scheduled because of the Newtown shooting.
