In some other town a group of 30 teens painting all over the windows of small businesses might be police blotter fare, but this is Bainbridge.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, young volunteers will help kick-off RePower Bainbridge by painting symbols of energy efficiency on storefront windows in downtown Winslow.

The “Paint the Town” campaign is part of an island-wide effort to be energy conscious in an effort to bring Bainbridge Island’s electricity usage in line with other Washington communities of its size. Currently, island residents consume 60 percent more electricity than the average Puget Sound Energy customer.

Additionally, energy stations will be set-up along Winslow Way where residents can sign up for a free home energy check-up, receive free compact fluorescent bulbs and ask questions about RePower Bainbridge. Bainbridge Ballet will perform an “Energy Dance,” in the Winslow Mall on the hour between 1 and 4 p.m.

Some of the students who will paint on Sunday met at Oil & Water Arts last weekend to prepare their murals.

Bainbridge High School freshman Kian Ashabi is one of the students working this week on ideas for his mural. He said he’s still gathering ideas, but will feature small icons “that people will recognize.”

“I care about the environment. I have a lot of people in my family who do this kind of thing,” he said on the phone Wednesday.

Ashabi has been paired with Winslow business Isla Bonita.

The RePower murals are a collaboration between City Council Member Hilary Franz, students from Bainbridge High School, West Sound Academy, Sakai and Woodward middle schools and Sustainable Bainbridge.
