Gina Batali was unanimously appointed to the board of commissioners for the Bainbridge Island Fire Department at the board’s meeting last week.
Batali will serve in the Position 3 seat left vacant by the resignation last week of Bruce Alward. She is a north Bainbridge resident and the former owner of Salumi Artisan Cured Meats in Pioneer Square.
It was a 4-0 decision; Alward officially resigned before the vote.
“Ms. Batali was known to a number of the commissioners and staff from her activism associated with the decision to fully open Station 23 on Phelps Road,” said BIFD Fire Commissioner Scott Isenman. “She also participated in our recent community input group in preparation for our strategic plan update.”
“She impressed everyone with her energy and positive attitude and connectedness in the community that gives her good perspective in how the fire district can best support the community,” Isenman added.
There were four other candidates for the post; Madeline Fort, Dana Marinelli, Jack Metz and Robert Peterson.
“All five of our candidates had qualities and attributes that qualified them as valid candidates, so [we] want to express appreciation for their willingness to step forward and commit to the demands of the position. We appreciate the support of the community we live and serve in,” Isenman said.
Batali will be sworn in at the board meeting on Aug. 1.
