The Bainbridge Community Foundation has announced the recipients of this year’s Philanthropy Awards, celebrating people and organizations whose dedication has significantly impacted the community.
Since 2009, BCF has been celebrating those whose work stands out and whose leadership inspires others to join them, a BCF news release says.
Outstanding Youth Philanthropist: Merrill Keating
Keating has demonstrated unwavering dedication to empowering young women locally and globally. Her initiatives, including Girls Ignited, showcase her commitment to education, health and safety. Her advocacy for women in STEM and her role on various UN-associated boards exemplify her leadership and impact. USA Today named her Washington Woman of the Year.
Outstanding Philanthropic Organization: Bethany Lutheran Congregation
This congregation stands as a shining beacon of compassion and inclusivity, embodying a steadfast commitment to aiding those in need. Through innovative utilization of their space and active involvement in community matters such as affordable housing, they exemplify a model of community service and solidarity. Care Pastor Erin Grayson credits the perseverance to the church’s abiding ethos and hopes it will be a model for others who want to make an impact.
Outstanding Philanthropists: Carol and David Myers
They have called BI a home away from home for over 80 and 60 years, respectively, and their reverence for this place is palpable. The Myerses have exemplified a legacy of philanthropy and community stewardship. Organizations like the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, the Port Gamble Forest Fund, Helpline House and the Puget Sound Restoration Fund are among those whose efforts have been amplified by this family’s support.
Philanthropic Spark Award: Chasity Malatesta
This award has been created to recognize people whose actions and advocacy focus on promoting equity and inclusion in the community. Malatesta embodies those traits, bridging divides and bringing people together. She juggles various roles and initiatives as a board member of IslandWood and the BI Museum of Art, along with co-chair of the Multicultural Advisory Council.
BCF is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all BI residents through strategic grantmaking, fostering philanthropy and strengthening nonprofits.
