A Bainbridge ferry is out of service after being damaged after striking its dock in Seattle Monday.
The dock and ferry Kaleetan have been removed from service until crews investigate and repair damage.
As a result, there will be one-slip service at Colman Dock until further notice due to repairs at Slip No. 1. It may cause loading, off-loading delays, state Ferries reports.
The hard landing was caused by high winds at Colman Dock.
The Kaleetan sailing from BI to Seattle slammed into one of two “wing walls.” The wooden walls act as funnels, feeding the ferries into the docking slips. While it’s common for the ferries, which weigh thousands of tons, to rub against the walls, the Kaleetan’s “hard landing” crunched the wooden beams, Ian Sterling of Washington State Ferries said.
WSF also reports alternative schedules on most routes until further notice.
The cause is the continued shortage of mariners worldwide that has been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fewer sailings will make service more reliable, WSF says. It will add routes whenever possible on a temporary basis.
Also, be sure to check changes due to the spring schedule starting April 10-June 18.
