Kitsap newspapers do well in statewide competition

The Bainbridge Island Review won 15 awards at the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association convention in Bellingham Oct. 8.

“We have a talented team in the Kitsap News Group in both the news and advertising side,” Publisher Terry Ward said, adding it’s a pleasure working with them, and he looks forward to the group winning more awards in the future.

Editor Steve Powell took two first places in election coverage and short general features, along with sharing the first place tourism award with Robert Smith, Drew Herman and Raquee Rivera.

Powell, who was president of WNPA this past year, also won a second-place honor for government reporting and third places in education, sports news and sports layout.

Review reporter Nancy Treder, who taught a seminar on photography at the convention, took a second-place award for sports personality profile.

Tyler Shuey, a reporter for the North Kitsap Herald, took third in sports personality profile.

Shuey, Treder and Powell also shared top honors for having the best website in the state among all the circulation classifications in the WNPA.

“That was a great win for us, as there were dozens of papers in that category,” Powell said.

Review freelancer Leslie Kelly took third in long general features.

In advertising for the Review, Dakota Harr and Brenda Jorgens took a first; Linday Smithberg and Jorgens a second; Jorgens and Smithberg combined with Molly Omann for a third; and Jorgens paired with Rivera for another third-place award.

Port Orchard is in Circulation Group 1, up to 2,000 circulation; Bainbridge and North Kitsap are in category 2, up to 3,400 circulation. Almost 50 papers competed with 1,166 entries for news, 280 for photography and 231 for advertising.
