Joe Biden was the top candidate for the Democratic Party in Kitsap County’s first vote tally Tuesday night for Washington state’s 2020 Presidential Primary.
The former vice president had 31.29 percent of the vote.
Bernie Sanders had 29.04 percent of the vote in the first tabulation of ballots.
So far, 12,529 ballots have gone Biden’s way, and Sanders has secured 11,626.
Democratic party officials submitted 13 candidates to be included on the ballot: Michael Bennet, Biden, Michael Bloomberg, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, John Delaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar, Deval Patrick, Sanders, Tom Steyer, Elizabeth Warren, and Andrew Yang.
There is also be a 14th option for voters to indicate a preference that delegates to the Democratic Party’s national convention remain uncommitted.
Donald Trump is the only Republican candidate included on the ballot, and an “uncommitted” option is not available for Republican voters. A write-in option was.
Many of the Democratic Party candidates dropped out of the race before Tuesday’s primary in Washington, though the ballot still included their names.
First out were Booker and Delaney, who both ended their campaigns in January.
Bennet, Patrick and Yang dropped out after the New Hampshire primary in February. Buttigieg and Steyer suspended their campaigns Feb. 29 after the South Carolina primary.
Bloomberg, Klobuchar and Warren fell out after the Super Tuesday primary.
In Washington state’s 2016 Presidential Primary, Hillary Clinton pulled in the most votes, with 50.1 percent of the vote in Kitsap County.
Sanders had 49.6 percent.
The numbers were Clinton, 16,661; Sanders, 16,512.
The purpose of the 2020 Presidential Primary is to determine how many delegates for each candidate attend the Democratic and Republican national conventions this summer.
There were 177,743 eligible registered voters in Kitsap County after registration closed Tuesday night.
