All burning permits have been rescinded throughout Bainbridge Island and unincorporated Kitsap County as of Monday, June 22, according to the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.

Recreational fires that are less than three feet in diameter and at least 25 feet from buildings and combustibles are still allowed at this time, as well as fires in outdoor fireplaces and campfires in approved locations in campgrounds.

This summer has been especially dry, officials noted as the reason for the ban.

Current fire conditions are usually not experienced until late July, and the warm, dry weather is predicted to continue, they said.

Bainbridge fire department officials are advising residents who have a recreational fire to be sure to follow these basic safety rules:

Always clear dry grass and other combustibles away from the fire area;

Always have a garden hose or other means of extinguishing the fire readily available; and

Never leave a fire unattended.
