Birty Raye Rosenbaum passed away peacefully April 24, 2014 surrounded by her family.
She was 94 years of age and was born May 18, 1919 to Joseph and Bertie Nalley in Cushman, Ark.
In 1946 she moved to Bainbridge Island. Before moving to Bainbridge Island she taught second and third grade in Cushman and also played on the women’s basketball team as a right guard.
On Dec. 7, 1946 she married Lee Rosenbaum Sr. They were married for 57 years.
Birty, known as Raye to all her friends, loved to garden, play bingo and crochet. The one thing she really enjoyed was cooking dinner every Tuesday night for her family and their friends. She did this for over 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her daughter Janice Pyke (Steve), son Lee Jr (Dana and her daughter, Carson); four grandchildren: Cynthia Kusnick (CPO David Kusnick) of Oak Harbor, Jayme Jones (Lt. Sequoia Jones) of Bainbridge Island, Chris Rosenbaum (Deana) of Poulsbo and Cody Rosenbaum (Lauren) of Poulsbo.
She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Michael of Bainbridge Island, David of Oak Harbor, Isley Raye of Oak Harbor, Kylie and Paige of Bainbridge Island, Makayla and Anthony of Poulsbo; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Messenger House and Franciscan Hospice for the kind and gentle care given to our mother. Her quick wit and endless love will be missed greatly.
Graveside services were held Saturday, May 3 at Seabold Cemetery on Bainbridge Island.
