At Thursday’s school board meeting Tamela Van Winkle, the district’s director of capital projects proposed a timeline extension for the new Bainbridge High School 100 Building.
If the extension is approved, the 100 Building would be completed in July 2021, a year later than originally scheduled.
Many of the board members voiced their support for the extension at the meeting.
Board member Mike Spence, who also serves on the 100 Building Steering Committee said that he was in favor of the extension.
“I think it’s the right thing to do,” Spence said. “I feel like if we wait for a little while and get all these other moving parts together, I think we’ll come up with a better product.”
Board member Lynn Smith, is also on the steering committee and said that an extension would allow for more time to collaborate with the community on the 100 Building project.
“We’ve been talking on the steering committee a lot about public partnerships with people within the community. This will give us actually a chance to make some of those connections and really start planning what that looks like,” Smith said.
Board President Sheila Jakubik said that while the board would not vote on the proposal at that meeting, she did feel the extension was strongly supported by the members of the board.
“I would say that the board is very much in support of putting this on pause, changing the timeline,” Jakubik said.
“It’s sort of like Netflix when it buffers, we’re gathering data,” Spence said. “The data’s coming in and we’re not seeing the picture right now.”
