SEATTLE CENTER – The Bainbridge boys lacrosse team finally brought back the trophy.

In an intense, emotional, physical game that showcased the best of two teams, the Spartans got big performances from a variety of players to defeat Mercer Island 9-7 to win the varsity A state championship for the first time in several years.

Despite the scoring prowess of All-American attacker Greg Mahoney (who had three goals) Bainbridge had several players score, including Jordan Foster with two big scores and the Gilbreath brothers, who combined to score the first and last goal of the game.

With the score tied through three quarters, Bainbridge got a goal from their All-American Dylan Masi at the 7:31 mark, then Masi contributed again with a nice assist to Max Olson for the score.

Taylor Dawson scored for Mercer Island, but Dayton Gilbreath hit the last goal of the game when he got the feed from Sam Snow (who somehow hung onto the ball after two crushing hits) and scored with 4:06 left.

The Mercer Island coaches asked for a stick check, but the referees determined it was legit, and the Spartans picked up enough ground balls to control the clock and take the title.

For the girls, they kept close with the Lions, but couldn’t match their speed, losing 10-6 in the varsity A championship game.

Down 6-5 at halftime, the Spartans struggled to hang onto the ball as the Lions got the shots they needed to win.

The girls finished with a record of 16-2 while the boys finished with a record of 17-0.
