A weekend welfare check led to the discovery of two dead women in a potential murder-suicide at a Port Orchard residence Nov. 19.

2 dead

Deputies were called to the 5000 block of SE Safe Haven Way in Port Orchard at 3:30 p.m. to investigate a call made from a neighbor. The caller said that she had not seen her neighbors for over a month.

Two deputies gained entry into the house and a bedroom and found the bodies of two women lying across a bed. A pistol found in one woman’s hand, and a statement from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office describes the bodies as “in advanced states of decomposition.”

Causes of death are expected to be determined by the county medical examiner’s office.

Shred fundraiser

Kitsap Bank recently held its fourth annual Shred to Fed events, presenting over $21,000 in donations to 10 local food banks.

During September and October, the Bank hosted 10 such events around the region. The public was invited to bring outdated or sensitive documents to various for secure destruction, while making a donation to the local food bank.

Combined with the bank’s corporate donations, it generated over $34,000 from local food banks in Kitsap, Jefferson, Clallam and Pierce counties, including Bremerton Foodline, Central Kitsap Food Bank, Helpline House, North Kitsap Fishline and South Kitsap Helpline.

Charles Robertson, executive vice president, Retail Banking, said over $90,000 has been raised for local food banks in the past four years. “We were able to not only raise vital funds but also awareness about food insecurity right here at home.”

Rayonier grants

Rayoner has awarded just over $74,000 to 35 nonprofits, including $11,500 to five in Kitsap County.

The Kitsap ones include American Red Cross, Martha and Mary Lutheran Services, North Kitsap Fishline, Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation and South Kitsap School District.

The Rayonier Community fund supports a range of community needs, including civic, cultural, educational, environmental, natural resources, and health and human services programs.
