Your fortune, oh reader: Don’t be hasty, prosperity will knock on your door soon.
Prosperity in the form of fried rice, kung pao shrimp and spicy garlic eggplant.
Yes, that’s right. Break out the chopsticks; Bainbridge is getting a Chinese restaurant.
Pau’s Asian Kitchen, the creation of computer analyst and islander Choi Lu, is slated to open at the Island Village shopping center this December.
Lu will move into the 1,445-square-foot space between Subway and Verizon, formerly occupied by Changing Seasons Florist.
The menu will feature made-to-order wok-fired classics based on Lu’s own family recipes.
Service will be “fresh casual” with dine-in and takeout options. The interior will be enhanced with a hint of Asian décor.
Before moving to the island two years ago, Lu helped manage a family chain of casual Chinese restaurants.
That record of success is what convinced Urban Renaissance Group, the commercial real estate company that manages the center, that Pau’s was an attractive investment.
“We’ve taken a very hands-on approach to how we invest in and upgrade the overall retail experience at Island Village,” CEO Pat Callahan explained.
“Providing opportunity for local entrepreneurs to open a business and thrive is core to our approach at Island Village. The center’s filled with people like that, whether it’s Casa Rojas or Hildebrand Cleaners or Sole Mates.”
And the timing is ripe, with the market for Chinese food wide open.
The island’s last purveyor, Simon’s Chinese Cuisine, closed in 2009, after a 10-year run at the Pavilion. Rumblings of discontent have been growing ever since.
“We know island residents are always looking for more varied and well-executed food options, and we’re excited to bring a new Chinese restaurant to residents and visitors,” Lu said. “We believe this location will be great for families and friends looking for fresh, high-quality and convenient food.”
