Citizens Academy offers insight into Kitsap public safety

The Kitsap Public Safety Citizens Academy is a collaborative effort between Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office aimed at enhancing the safety and quality of life in the county.

Assistant fire chief Ryan Madison of CKF&R explained that the program offers citizens an in-depth look at the daily operations, challenges and professional requirements of local public safety agencies.

The idea originated in Indianapolis, IN where police and fire departments run a similar program. After learning about it during training outside this state, CKF&R fire chief Jason Christian brought the concept back and worked with local law enforcement to adapt it for Kitsap.

The nine-week program alternates weekly between fire and law enforcement topics. Classes run from April 17 to June 12, with graduation set for June 14.

The program is designed to provide hands-on learning. Fire-related sessions include an overview of fire service history, demonstrations of firefighting equipment, insights into emergency medical services, and training in technical rescue operations such as rope rescue and auto extrication.

Law enforcement classes, led by deputy Jason Hedström, will cover use of force and de-escalation techniques, corrections, patrol operations and investigations.

Sheriff John Gese said that the collaboration offers participants a comprehensive view of public safety operations in the county, reflecting a broader trend in law enforcement to engage with the community proactively.

“I’d encourage people if they have an interest in learning more about the police and sheriff’s office to take the plunge and apply,” Gese said.

The free academy is open to residents countywide. Madison said the program hopes to accommodate up to 30 participants this year, with plans to grow and involve more organizations in the future. Registration details will be announced soon.

Madison said the program’s goal of fostering understanding and advocacy for public safety professions. “We want participants to leave as informed advocates who support the work we do and understand the challenges we face,” he said.
