City issues excessive heat warning

Things are heating up on Bainbridge Island this week.

According to an advisory message sent out by the city Monday morning, the National Weather Service in Seattle has issued an excessive heat warning, which will be in effect from 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 through 3 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4.

The previously announced excessive heat watch is no longer in effect.

According to the warning: “Unusually hot weather is forecast to begin Tuesday and continue through Friday, with widespread record highs on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Thursday should be the hottest day in this stretch for most spots, and high temperatures will probably be within 5 degrees of the all-time record high. Highs on Tuesday will be in the mid 80s to lower 90s, warming to the 90s to near 105 on Thursday.”

Friday will supposedly be a bit cooler, but highs will still be in the upper 80s and 90s.

The city cautioned that residents that heat illnesses are possible with temperatures like those expected. People engaged in outdoor activities should have access to plenty of beverages, as well as places to get out of the direct sunlight.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
