Bainbridge’s newly established Transportation Benefit District may finally move ahead with a new tax on island vehicles.

The $20 car tab fee was initially the inspiration to form the district. Through it, other forms of funding such as grants and bonds are also be available to the district.

The city estimates that a $20 car tab fee could generate approximately $330,000 per year that could be spent on the island’s underfunded and ailing roads.

A public hearing on the proposal to establish the $20 fee has been called for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14.

The district’s board — composed of the city council — will consider the tax and possibly approve it that same night.

The city council unanimously approved the formation of the Transportation Benefit District, and appointed themselves as its board, in August.
