The Bainbridge Island Police Department will soon be adding new vehicles to the force.
At this week’s meeting, the city council authorized the purchase of three 2014 Ford Police Interceptor SUVs.
At a base price of $26,587 for each vehicle and after additional outfitting expenses, the total cost of purchasing the Interceptors would be approximately $122,000. The costs would be covered by the police department’s annual capital equipment budget.
Outfitting measures include such things as mesh metal partitions between the rear and front seats, driver-side spotlights and wiring for Cencom radios.
The upgrades also include installing emergency lights, light bars, a desk console and radios for approximately $10,500.
The department’s 2014 capital equipment budget is $135,000.
At last week’s council meeting, Bainbridge Island Police Chief Matthew Hamner clarified that the almost $13,000 remaining in the budget would be used to buy radars and other equipment needed in each vehicle.
