Parents and community members are invited to learn how to grow resilient children at a special presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 in the library at Bainbridge High School.
Clay Roberts, a school program developer, trainer, international consultant, author and keynote speaker, will lead a vibrant discussion about the good things that can be done to lay a foundation of assets that supports thriving and resilient children. Adults will also learn to embrace the natural challenges that parenting brings.
Roberts’ focus will be on developmental assets, which are common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible, successful adults. Because of its basis in youth development, resiliency, and prevention research and its proven effectiveness, the Developmental Assets framework has become one of the most widely used approaches to positive youth development in the United States.
Roberts is a consultant in more than 40 states and six foreign countries, the founder of two companies and the CEO of the Comprehensive Health Education Foundation, based in Seattle. He has received an extensive list of awards and has authored or co-developed a number of publications and programs, including but not limited to a violence prevention curriculum for grades K-9, a drug education curriculum for grades K-12, and the Natural Helpers program for grades 4-12.
The event is sponsored by the Just Know Coalition. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. This is the first event set to honor a goal parents identified for themselves and their children in a survey the coalition conducted last winter – to learn about resilience, the ability to self-correct and thrive in the face of challenges.
