Some 140 motorists were stopped on island roads for speed violations by Bainbridge police and their county cohorts during the monthly DUI task force patrol.
Ten officers from Bainbridge, Bremerton, Poulsbo, Suquamish and Kitsap County participated in the eight-hour on-island session, which saw 228 traffic stops – “a lot for a normal night on Bainbridge,” said BIPD officer Rob Corn, but typical for the task force.
Officers made two DUI arrests, and issued four citations for suspended licenses.
Police collar Harbor ‘pirate’
Bainbridge police Saturday arrested a modern-day buccaneer, who they said prowled Eagle Harbor at night in a fleet and fast canoe, burglarizing both liveaboards and vessels anchored in marinas.
The 55-year-old suspect, whose name was withheld pending arraignment, was arrested for possession of stolen property and being a felon in possession of a firearm, said Bainbridge Police Lt. Scott Anderson.
Police served a search warrant on the 40-foot sailboat anchored out in southeast Eagle Harbor Saturday afternoon, Anderson said, looking for stolen marine-type gear, and recovered a number of items on the list.
They also found a sawed-off, pistol-grip shotgun.
“So far, we have found criminal history in the suspect from eight states and Canada, including armed robbery, weapons possession and two escapes,” Anderson said.
The suspect had been anchored in Eagle Harbor for about a year, Anderson said, but does not appear to have other local ties. He is believed to have lived for a time in the Kingston area, and prior to that in Seattle. He was not known to be employed, but received some form of benefit check.
“He seemed to stay in one place until he was thrown out,” Anderson said.
The boat was searched in the suspect’s absence, Anderson said, and he was arrested without incident at the city dock. He was taken to Kitsap County Jail, where he was awaiting arraignment.
Police were alerted to the situation after complaints from harbor liveaboards, Anderson said.
