The Bainbridge Island woman who died in an early morning house fire on Monte Vista Drive Saturday has been identified as Anne A. Schlee by the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy was conducted Monday, and the examination determined that Schlee died of “asphyxia due to inhalation of toxic combustible materials as a result of the house fire.”

The blaze was reported by a neighbor just before 1 a.m. April 18.

Assistant Chief Luke Carpenter of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department said the two homeowners heard smoke alarms and one resident found flames when he went downstairs to investigate.

He was not able to make it back upstairs because of the fire. Carpenter said the two-story, single-family home at 6654 Monte Vista Drive was engulfed by flames when the fire department arrived, which prevented firefighters from entering the house.

Firefighters got the fire under control in about two hours, according to Carpenter, and the victim was later found dead in an upstairs bedroom.

Carpenter, who is also Bainbridge’s fire marshal, said after interviews with witnesses and the homeowner, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and probably originated in a pantry used for storage.

The house, which was built in 1975, was destroyed.
