‘Twas the last council meeting before Christmas, and all through the chamber, not a resident was stirring, not even the mayor.

Of course, Bainbridge Island Council Mayor Debbi Lester had an excused absence.

The last council meeting of the year was quick and simple Wednesday night. Originally scheduled for 90 minutes, the meeting was put to bed within 45 minutes.

While the agenda was light, one thing was noteworthy.

“I understand that this will be the last meeting with our legal counsel Will Patton,” Councilwoman Anne Blair pointed out.

Patton has served as the city’s lawyer under an interim status for a little more than a year. He submitted his resignation letter in early November. The city is currently seeking a new lawyer.

Council members each thanked Patton for his time with the city, and noted his help with numerous legal battles including a high profile civil rights case prompted by the police shooting of a mentally ill man in 2010.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with you, it’s been an honor,” said Councilwoman Kirsten Hytopoulos. “You and Jack are the best

attorneys I’ve ever worked with. Thank you for serving us.”

Jack Johnson was the attorney who held the position before Patton came on board with the city.

Patton thanked the council for their kind words and said he looks forward to retiring. Almost.

“I’ve been told over a number of years that my project is to clean the garage,” Patton said.
