The Bainbridge Island City Council voted Monday to extend the existing guard rail and impose traffic restrictions on Fort Ward Hill Road.

The decision comes after several Fort Ward Hill residents expressed concern earlier this month for semi-trucks traveling on the road.

Residents told the council during its

June 9 business meeting that due to the sharp turns on the roadway, truck drivers have a difficult time staying in their lane.

With the council’s vote, now truckers will be required to have flaggers for any vehicle over 40 feet in length.

Likewise, Public Works Director Barry Loveless said the extended guard rail along the roadway will be installed in the next couple months once design and contracting phases are complete.

Signage restricting truck size will also be installed within the next two weeks.

The council voted unanimously at its meeting Monday, June 23 to approve the recommended safety improvements.
