Bainbridge may finalize permanent regulations for pot businesses by the end of June.

After an initial reading Monday, the Bainbridge Island City Council has scheduled a public hearing to revise its regulations on Bainbridge marijuana business.

The council approved an ordinance regulating marijuana businesses earlier this month with a six-month sunset date. With this week’s amendments, though, the council will soon finalize the ordinance and remove its automatic expiration.

Among other revisions, the island’s lone marijuana retail shop will move to the Day Road business-industrial zone along with growing and processing businesses.

Currently the ordinance allows marijuana retail in neighborhood service centers at Lynwood Center, Rolling Bay and Island Center.

Mayor Anne Blair said Monday that the industrial area on Day Road was an ideal location for marijuana retail because it would be located near processing and growing. She also said its proximity to the highway would keep traffic off neighborhood streets.

The change will also address numerous concerns made to the city from Rolling Bay residents who oppose a retail pot shop in their neighborhood.

“To me, it was a place that seemed the most appropriate as opposed to a default,” Blair said.

In addition, the council asked to remove the energy requirements for marijuana-growing businesses.

The redraft will no longer require growers to have a percentage of its energy come from island-generated resources or be renewable.

The city may request documentation or monitoring reports on growers’ energy consumption.

A public hearing on the revisions will be held Monday, June 23, during the council’s regularly scheduled meeting.
