The depth of the Bishop Blanchet track and field team was most evident before the start of the women’s 3200-meter run Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

Ten yellow jerseys lined up against two in Spartan blue – a quantity the Braves used to their advantage all afternoon at Bainbridge High School.

While first-place finishes were nearly equal between the two teams, it was the second- and third-place spots that made the difference in the 164-140 win for the Braves, with Eastside Catholic a distant third.

Junior Matt Wauters returned from a sprained ankle to throw for the Sparts, and despite a few lingering pains, outdistanced the competition again by a huge margin.

“There’s a lot of pressure on (the ankle), and it’s affecting my pivot,” Wauters said. “I’m throwing about 166 (feet) right now (in discus), and I should be around 180.

“Another couple of weeks though, and I’ll be good for State.”

Wauters threw the discus 166-03, good for first place by a staggering 38 feet.

His only stiff competition in the shot put was his brother Mike. The pair threw 56-08 and 43-04, respectively, for first and second place points.

Tim Freeman swept the 400- and 800-meter races, and Michelle Baggett took both the 100 and 200 for the women.
