Design Review Board to discuss Waterfront Park renovation designs

Design plans have not slowed down for Bainbridge Island's Waterfront Park.

Design plans have not slowed down for Bainbridge Island’s Waterfront Park.

Studio Cascade, the design team hired late last year for the project, will present its 15 percent master plan design to the city’s Design Review Board on Monday, Feb. 24.

The Bainbridge Island City Council gave the first nod of approval to the team last January, giving the go-ahead for the consultants to refine their conceptual design and work toward a 30 percent master plan design.

In the most recent conceptual master plan, dated Feb. 12, the Waterfront Park includes four tiers of elevated ground, starting at the existing play area near Waterfront Park Community Center and ending at the public dock. Each tier is connected by steps that include landscaped, zig-zagging pathways.

In the most prominent tier, where the rowing club facilities are currently located, is space for a multi-use performance amphitheater and rowing club boathouse.

At the shoreline a waterfront plaza and viewing space will be constructed along with a boardwalk. The boardwalk will wrap around the edge of Waterfront Park until it intersects with Waterfront Trail at the eastern tip of the site.

Also at the shoreline, the dock will include an extended boat launch and hockey stick shaped pier with additional piers extending east for transient moorage.

This month’s DRB meeting will discuss the first portion of Phase One with input from the board. The consultants are scheduled to present the design to the city council on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Community members are invited attend the special meeting with the board which will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24 in the council chambers at city hall.

Once the city council approves the 15 percent design plan, the team will go on to complete Phase One of the design.

The consultant will present a completed Phase One to the Design Review Board on March 31, and the council plans to review and approve it by mid-April.
