In a classic duel between pitchers, Hailey Willman edges Taylor Greenfield.

The 2005 Bainbridge Island Little League Majors softball championship game was one for the ages, with the Diamonds victorious in a 1-0 battle.

The teams split their regular-season series, each winning two games.

In the playoffs, the Diamonds defeated the Commotion to reach the championship game, while the Blaze knocked off the Ice.

On a sunny Friday evening, the stands at the Strawberry Hill Park field were packed to see the top two teams – and the league’s top two pitchers – face off.

Hailey Willmann (Diamonds) and Taylor Greenfield (Blaze) did not disappoint, both pitching fine games.

Only five runners reached base on Greenfield, while Willmann threw a no-hitter, striking out nine and allowing just three baserunners with two walks.

In the end, all that separated the two teams was one unearned run.

The Diamonds’ Clara Dunn was on second base when she decided to try to break the deadlock. With an aggressive lead from the base, she drew a strong throw to second from Blaze catcher Morgan Moniz.

Dunn broke for third base on the throw, and when the toss from second got past the Blaze third baseman, she streaked home.

The Blaze twice had runners at third, but each time the Diamond pitching and defense had an answer.

Willmann came up big in the fourth with a strikeout, and in the fifth, Cali Moore fielded a drive off the bat of Cailyn Schreck and fired it to first for the third out.

Greenfield was able to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the heart of the Diamonds’ order in the bottom of the fourth inning after hits by Emily Schneider, Ashley Hufnagle and Hailey Willman.

When congratulated on Saturday morning, Dunn said she was glad she scored, because otherwise the two teams would probably still be playing.
