A early morning blaze damaged a home near Island Center Monday.

Firefighters were summoned at 7:25 a.m. to the 7400 block of Springridge Road, where they found an outbuilding engulfed in flames, with the blaze spreading to the main residence. The fire was extinguished without incident.

The outbuilding, which contained a home heating boiler unit, was a total loss with all contents destroyed, Fire Chief Jim Walkowski said.

The residence sustained damage to the garage, an attached deck and a small portion of the interior, with total structural losses estimated at $75,000 or more.

Cause of the fire is under investigation. The residence was not equipped with smoke detectors, Walkowski said.

***Celebrate the salmon season

For this homecoming, you can skip the corsage and fancy duds.

In fact, you should plan to get wet and a little dirty – all in the service of healthy salmon habitat on Bainbridge.

The city’s Watershed Council celebrates the return of spawning salmon with the island’s first Salmon Homecoming on Nov. 15.

Participants in this half-day event will meet at 9 a.m. at City Hall, and travel by bus to seine for salmonids and other creatures at the entrance to Shel-chelb estuary. The crew will measure and catalog the catch, with breaks to tour this remarkable man-made estuarine environment, created only six years ago and now one of the most productive salmon habitats on the island.

Then it is off to the newly completed salmon-friendly culvert at Issei Creek, followed by a stop at Waterfall Gardens, where we hope to see salmon jumping from pool to pool in this beautifully restored stretch of Manzanita Creek.

At each site, participants will learn from the scientists and community stewards, who are volunteering their time to salmon recovery and conservation efforts on the island.

Then the group returns to city hall for a late lunch and a discussion of the island’s salmon issues, past, present and future.
