Shellfish closure

The eastern shores of Bainbridge Island are closed to shellfish harvesting due to high levels of paralytic poison.

The Kitsap Public Health District issued the closure that includes all of the bays and inlets from Point Monroe south to Restoration Point June 18.

The closure affects harvesting for clams, oysters and mussels, but not crab or shrimp.

If you’ve eaten poisoned shellfish, symptoms include tingling around the mouth, spreading to the fingers and toes then loss on control of arms and legs, followed by difficulty in breathing. If a person consumes enough toxin, a victim can suffocate and die within 30 minutes, a KPHD news release says.

BIMA events

Bainbridge Island Museum of Arts has a number of events coming up.

The Summer Art Market runs through July 28 at 11 a.m. weekends in the courtyard. Vendors sell crafts, and some booths include hands-on art making.

LGBTQIA+ artists show their works and poetry at the Matters of Pride pop-up exhibition at 4 p.m. June 22 in the BIMA auditorium.

A Pride wine dinner will take place at the BIMA Bistro and Vintage Wine Bar at 6 p.m. June 28, featuring LGBTQIA+ winemakers and chefs. The event includes wine tasting, snacks, a three-course dinner and more.

On July 5, Alec Shaw will perform at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. His sound is a soulful combination of gospel and Northwest folk.

BI council

At a recent Bainbridge Island City Council meeting, it was told the city received a $500,000 state grant for the Madison Avenue Bundled Project.

The council also proclaimed June 19 the “Day to Celebrate Juneteenth 2024,” and passed another saying June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Pride Month.

It also decided to solicit bids for a Solar Photovoltaic Panel System at Woodward Middle School to offset the carbon of the Ted Spearman Justice Center project. And it made five appointments to the Ethics and Design Review boards, and the Utility Advisory Committee. Four appointments were made to the Race Equity Advisory Committee.

Free concert

Ranger and the Re’Arrangers will perform a free concert at 6 p.m. June 28 at Winslow Green on Bainbridge Island.
