The city of Bainbridge Island has completed its environmental review of the Bainbridge High School 100 Building replacement project.
The city issued a “mitigated determination of nonsignificance,” or MDNS, on the project on Friday, March 22.
The MDNS decision means the city has determined the project does not pose a “probable significant impact on the environment” if mitigation measures proposed by the city are undertaken during construction.
Mitigation measures include the preparation and implementation of a “dust control plan,” as well as the proper management and disposal of any dangerous waste generated by demolition activities.
The project involves the demolition of the existing 100 Building on the BHS campus, which includes the existing facility that encompasses 41,509 square feet of classrooms and assembly space, and the nearby 2,803 square foot music building.
A new 35,000-square-foot building will be constructed in its place, and the project includes interior changes to other buildings on the high school campus.
The new single-story 100 Building will continue to house the school’s CTE (career and technical education) program, as well as the addition of space for a new Metals Equipment program.
According to the school district, the building will have two gathering commons areas divided by the Innovation and Advanced Technology Labs, and a new school kitchen (formerly housed in the 200 Building) is included in the new 100 Building.
A timeline prepared for the project shows the Bainbridge Island School District hopes to receive a conditional use permit from the city by May, with demolition of the existing 100 Building beginning before July.
Construction of the new 100 Building would follow the end of demolition of the old structure, sometime near the end of August.
The new 100 Building is expected to be ready for students and staff by January 2021.
According to the city, construction activities for the project that will occur within 100 feet of residential zones will be prohibited from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays and before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. Saturdays.
Work inside the buildings will be allowed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sundays.
