Former Kitsap County Commissioner Rob Gelder has been named Poulsbo’s first city administrator.
“I have a passion for local government,” Gelder said. “It’s where we touch the lives of residents every day, and I am excited to support the city of Poulsbo in implementing its community-developed vision for the future. I look forward to working alongside the mayor, City Council, staff and residents to ensure that Poulsbo continues to grow and thrive while maintaining the values that make it such a special place.”
Gelder will begin his new role Jan. 16, bringing over 13 years of public service experience to the position, a city news release states. He resigned from the county commission in 2023 after serving 12 years to take a job as the assistant manager for Thurston County.
“Rob brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable to our city’s future,” Mayor Becky Erickson said. “His background in leadership, budget management, policy development and strategic planning will help provide the stability and guidance needed as Poulsbo moves forward. This role will allow for professional management that supports the vision of the City Council and better serves our residents.”
The council approved in October for the mayor position to become part-time in 2026, coinciding with the governing body’s decision in June to approve a new business tax to fund the full-time city administrator position. The position, under the direction of the mayor, acts as the chief administration officer of the city for day-to-day operations and makes recommendations to the mayor and council for policy, per the job description.
Erickson has announced she won’t be seeking re-election for mayor, a position she has held since 2010. Councilmember Ed Stern has announced his intentions to run, along with local business consultant and insurance strategist Dan Weedin.
