The community is invited to come celebrate the second annual Akio Suyematsu Day at the Suyematsu and Bentryn Family Farms.

The Suyematsu & Bentryn Family Farmers Guild, the Suyematsu family and others will gather from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19 to remember the locally grown hero.

Akio Suyematsu was the last of the original Japanese American Bainbridge Island berry farmers, and he created an agricultural and community legacy on a working landscape second to none in the Puget Sound region. His life’s work has kept alive a taste of Bainbridge for over nine decades and inspired generations of local farmers.

Following his passing in 2012, the city of Bainbridge Island proclaimed Aug. 19 as “Akio Suyematsu Day” in honor of this iconic and beloved farmer.

The celebration will feature a memorial display of Akio Suyematsu’s life, an historic walking tour of the farm, live music and locally grown food and refreshments. All are welcome.

The event will be held at Suyematsu & Bentryn Family Farms on Day Road East.
