Warming temperatures and blue skies herald the return of the Bainbridge Island Farmers’ Market this weekend.

The venue offering local produce, edibles and hand-crafted wares by local vendors is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday through Oct. 16 in the plaza next to City Hall.

“Everyone’s been working hard, getting their plants growing,” said Steve Phillips, who comes on board as this year’s market president. “We’re really excited about starting up again.”

About 15 farms will open booths, according to Phillips, about the same number as last year, but there will be new booths featuring Bainbridge Island Winery produce and, later in the season, local oysters.

This year’s market show-

cases young gardeners of all ages, expanding on last year’s once-a-month displays by grade-schoolers. The market will also feature seedlings, giving local gardeners a chance to stock up on starters – as well as buying some good vegetables and cheese.

The association, which currently has about 50 members, welcomes new booths, and encourages those considering selling produce at this year’s market to get in touch.

“We have experienced farmers who are available to help mentor people who would like to be in the Farmers’ Market,” Phillips said. “Our purpose is to encourage local farming, so we’re always anxious to help anyone who is interested in moving in that direction.”
